Bob Hawke survives leadership vote

Parliament House: Bob Hawke speaking to the media after surviving a leadership vote on Monday 3rd June 1991. Hawke 66 votes. Keating 44 votes. Paul Keating later became PM following a spill vote in December.

This photo appeared on the front page of The Sydney Morning Herald on Tuesday 4th June.

I was fresh out of high school, and radio 2GB’s Canberra bureau chief Stephen Spencer gently guided me on the day of the leadership vote. I was recording key moments for 2GB inside Parliament House. I’m not sure much of my audio was used, but I did get 2GB lots of ‘micage.’

I came across this ‘Bob Hawke’ photo this month…and if you look closely at the photo, you’ll see that I’m standing to Bob Hawke’s left…along with other media.
